I’m Gainer Stalder. For ten years I worked with artists, then I started restaurants in Amsterdam. They went bankrupt during covid. Since 2026 I’ve lived in Bali with my family. Free by Design is how I’ve lived and worked ever since.

In Japan, broken ceramics are repaired with gold. The break stays visible and becomes part of the piece. In the same way, the bankruptcy of my restaurants belongs to what I build now.
